Topic – Climate crisis: a call to Amateur Astronomers. How we can make a difference to climate inaction.
Speaker: Steve Cookson
Steve Cookson is an IT professional turned stargazer and eco-warrior. A science graduate from Durham University, Chair of Crawley Astronomical Society, FRAS, and BAA member, he blends tech savvy with cosmic curiosity and climate urgency.
Synopsis
Steve delves into the critical relationship between carbon dioxide levels and global warming. The truth is worse than we thought. Despite 128 years of knowledge, CO2 has skyrocketed from 320 ppm to 426 ppm since 1958. NASA and Mauna Loa Observatory are at the heart of this monitoring.
Steve shows that firm causative links exist between human activity and global warming and severe consequences will follow if we fail to act. He will suggest that amateur astronomers can play a crucial role by collecting and distributing CO2 data and help to address climate change.
Learn how amateur astronomers can combine sky-watching with climate action and outreach. With telescopes and observatories worldwide, we’re uniquely positioned to gather crucial environmental data. Steve will show how to collect and share CO2 info, using our passion for the sky for a sustainable future.
