A dedicated astronomer with a passion for the cosmos, Tony Roberts has become a cornerstone of astronomical education and community engagement in Southeast England. As Chairman of both the Croydon Astronomical Society and Edenbridge and District Astronomers, along with his leadership role at SAGAS, he has dedicated himself to sharing the wonders of the night sky with others. His fellowship with the Royal Astronomical Society, maintained for over four decades, reflects his longstanding commitment to the field. While Tony’s expertise spans the astronomical spectrum, he particularly delights in studying comets and variable stars and has made public outreach and lecturing his mission to inspire future generations of stargazers.
Subject: Astronomical Oddities
The history of astronomy is rich with fascinating misconceptions that were once considered indisputable scientific facts. These historical theories, while seemingly amusing to modern observers, were grounded in the best available evidence and scientific methods of their time. Tonight, we’ll explore these captivating astronomical “untruths” and understand the logical foundations that made them so convincing to our predecessors. Among these tales of scientific evolution, we’ll also uncover a unique case where celestial mythology was deliberately fabricated for financial gain.
