Astronomy in the ancient world

Beginning with a brief summary of archaeoastronomy, this is an overview of the astronomers and astronomical knowledge in Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Classical Greece and the Hellenistic World (including the Great Library at Alexandria). There are some great names along the way, including Ptolemy, Aristotle, Hipparchus, Eratosthenes, Pythagoras and Aristarchus.

Dr. Mike Leggitt
 
Dr. Mike Leggett, a distinguished scholar, earned his PhD in Chemistry in 1986 and has since embarked on a rich academic journey. A Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (FRAS) and the British Interplanetary Society (FBIS) since 1986 and 1984, respectively, he demonstrates a steadfast commitment to both astronomy and space exploration. Dr. Leggett is a founding member and current General Secretary of the Society for the History of Astronomy (SHA), actively contributing to the preservation and study of astronomical history. Serving as SHA County Co-ordinator for multiple regions underscores his significant influence in documenting astronomical history.
 
In addition to his roles within the SHA, Dr. Leggett is a dedicated member of the Milton Keynes Astronomical Society since 1993, enriching local celestial pursuits. His journey, spanning both chemistry and astronomy, reflects a harmonious blend of scientific expertise and unwavering dedication to advancing our understanding of the cosmos.
 
As a founder member of the South Lincolnshire Astronomical and Geophysical Society in 1976, Dr. Leggett initiated astronomy talks for his local society. Since then, he has presented lectures for the British Interplanetary Society, University of Aberdeen evening classes, and various astronomical societies and groups throughout the UK. Currently serving as the General Secretary and Council member of the SHA, Dr. Leggett is the county co-ordinator for Buckinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk, and Rutland in the SHA survey of the UK’s astronomical history. A Fellow of both the Royal Astronomical Society and the British Interplanetary Society, he is also a member of the British Astronomical Association, the Society for Popular Astronomy, the National Space Society, and the Planetary Society. Graduating in Chemistry and Pharmacology from the University of Nottingham, Dr. Leggett holds a PhD in Chemistry, showcasing his diverse academic background.
